Never played it, but we will soon enough for the podcast. Considering it was a relatively new game, the $16 USD price for it was concerning...

Its not amazing but it alright. Takes some time getting used to the battle system, switching outfits in and out depending on the fight. I bought it at release, was dissappointed. Oh well
Cheaper means less buyers regret..

I'm just disappointed in how disconnected the characters feel from the other games. It's hard to have any emotional connection with them.
I also F'd up and starting killing off different species before I realized that I needed them at didn't points in the game to farm their abilities. Oops.

I beat it 3 times and platinumed it because I strangely enough enjoyed it. Having the Cloud costume and hearing the FF7 victory fanfare was fun. Also doing quests and exploring fairly large environments was exciting.
Then getting new costumes and changing how you look is fun. I made an outfit that looked like Trinity from the Matrix.
Btw I suggest you play on EASY in the first playthrough even Square Enix said its best. Easy in this game is like a normal mode. You get to carry over your items and experience to your next game too.

Did you ever change your equipment around? I found myself only using the same outfits and weapons for the most part.

The only weapons I really switched to were the ones I got for killing off the different species of monster. I thought this was a cool concept by the way, but as I said earlier I screwed myself for killing them off too early.

I totally agree with Shinryu. This game was enjoyable. I had the Cloud Costume as well and used it to the very end. The Slayer Ability is the best move in the game. Massive damage if you use it as the "Breaking" Blow. Lightning is amazing and also very attractive. She gives female characters something to strive toward because of how great she is in this game. She's like Jesus!! But better!!! I got to play, all the way to the Final Day, the first time through. Which I felt like I almost wasn't going to a few times. I give Lightning Returns a 4.5 out of 5. Thank you Square Enix for another great game.

Did you ever use the Soldier of Peace garb? I found it did more damage than Cloud's costume later in the game. Also that end CGI movie was amazing.

Reopening a relatively old topic, but I'm sure it'll pick back up when the podcast gets to this game. I'm on the same page as Shinryu. I thoroughly enjoyed this game and the series as a whole. I feel the gameplay gets even better as the series progressed from XIII. I really liked the customizable outfits, the style of tactics in this game is unlimited, there is no right or wrong way of doing anything, it's really how YOU play. The time clock in the beginning can be frustrating because you feel like the game is slipping away or makes you feel that you have to rush but you learn quickly while doing the quests that time can be extended in many ways. Lightning grew on me by this point and I'd definitely say she's one of the most powerful characters in the series, comparable to Terra in being equally physically and magically strong.
I didn't want to start a new thread so I'm posting here and stop reading here if you haven't played it. Sometimes in the series the connection between some characters is vague or maybe better said to be interpreted by the player. What does everyone think about the love connections between the characters? I just quickly "rewound" XIII-2 and thought that Noel and Serah were falling for each other although they both love(d) someone else, Snow and Yeul. Noel seemed to make the point that he was the total opposite of Snow and that Serah deserved better. Serah seemed to miss Snow at first but eventually fell for Noel through their journey. Toward the end of XIII and mostly in LR I felt that Lightning fell for Snow. Like she hated that he was a total tool but couldn't resist type of thing. Snow I think would go for anything, he just likes pleasing people. I thought that Hope admired Lightning a lot but was crushing on Vanille. Then with Vanille I could never tell if she reciprocated Hope or were her and Fang partners or just like sisters. I don't think there was any man in the series "man" enough for Fang, so she's pretty much out of it.
