Saying so, I guess Iron Maiden would be my favorite band. There seem to be 4 or 5 different stages of the band, so depending on what I want to listen to I can usually find it with in their discography. Er, well, counting solo projects and all, too.

The Blaize Bailey years were the sad phase for me. I got out of Maiden the last couple of years of high school. I was spoiled by their release schedule. Once they slowed down a bit (wow this sounds like FF...) kind of forgot about them. Plus, Bruce Dickinson left the band in a spectacular way. I think he was sent to hell by a magician during a PPV event... I think... Anyway, I was in a Wherehouse Records (anyone remember those) and saw two Maiden CDs I had never seen before in the used section (anyone remember THOSE?). I picked them up and immediately thought I bought the wrong CDs after listening to them.
Once Bruce rejoined the band and I heard him do those same songs live, I went back and re-listened. Now I appreciate the songs and even Blaize Bailey's era. I still like Virtual XI better than X Factor, but X Factor's songs sound better life with Bruce than XI's do.
I felt the same way when I heard the first two albums. They were so different from the ones I was used to hearing. But they have all grown on me as I have experienced different things and listen to the songs at different times.

Now that I have slept, I feel I have to elaborate on this. Danzig. And Samhain if you want more. That was his band post-Misfits but pre-Danzig.
I found Danzig because my much idler cousin made me a mix tape back in the early 90's with some Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, and of course Danzig. This mix tape spawned my love of metal, a love that I revisit now and again.

Anyone love 80s Hair Metal? I know I'm dating myself but I think these bands were the epitome of rock and roll stars.

What about 70s glam rock? Pre metal stuff like Ziggy Stardust. My mother liked that stuff and naturally I developed an appreciation.

I like the stuff from the 70s, but I remember watching the 80s MTV videos when I was growing up so that is my favorite genre of music.
On a side note, remember when MTV played music videos? There was a funny comedian on the Bob and Tom show who was talking that it should be false advertisement. It's like calling Round Table and saying "I want a large pepperoni," and the guy says "we don't have that, we only sell raccoon hats and eye patches. "

I used to wake up on Saturday morning as a teen and watch the top 20 music videos of the week. I don't know exactly when mtv made the switch. I'd wager it started with shows like the real world.

Or all of those old cable channels... TLC: The Learning Channel? With its programming? History Channel... now just a variety of antique roadshow type stuff. HBO: Home Box Office, but most of the stuff they show is original programming not found in theaters. OK, that last one is actually not a complaint :-)
